Maybe you’re still shopping for holiday gifts for family and friends. Or maybe you’ve moved on and you’re shopping for yourself now. Here’s a list of the next 8 fitness toys you neeeeed:

soft roller

Fascia stimulation: a total game-changer.

Soft Foam Roller This is the original softie, designed before all the other more expensive ‘special’ rollers. I’ve tried ’em all and this is the one I keep coming back to. It’s the same one that I use in all of my Pain Free Body workshops! Why do you need soft? It stimulates the fascia layer that sits between your skin and the meat below. When it comes to rollers, always go soft before you go hard. **Note, this one is SOFTER than the hard blue rollers often found in health clubs. Really.

grid foam roller trigger point

Best for Trigger Point work.

The Grid Firm Roller This one is for my hardcore athletes who build up more adhesions and other lovely ‘stuck’ stuff deeper beneath the surface layer. Use the soft roller first to heat the surface layer, then use the firm roller.

pilates magic circle romana kryzaowska

The coolest little exercise tool created by Joseph Pilates

Pilates Magic Circle What, you don’t own one of these yet?! Designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s — using the metal bands pried off beer kegs, no less — this little ditty is fabulous for turning on accessory muscles while you tone and firm your entire body. (I secretly think the Thigh Master was a spin off of this, but that’s just me. The Magic Circle does everything the Thigh Master does….and more!) If you luck out, Stamina might still be shipping this item with a DVD featuring the grande dame of the Pilates world, Romana Kryzanowska.  Need more ideas of what to do with your Magic Circle? Bender Ball squishy ball overball

Who knew something this small could evolve your exercises so much?

Bender Ball There are lots of brands of the “squishy ball” and honestly, they’re all pretty similar. I’m giving my vote to the Bender Ball because of the fab videos that come with it. This thing is ingenius for ab work and structural releases.  Need more ideas of what to do with your Ball? Get this book.

Nike studio wrap barre pilates yoga dance

Yes, this is the pair I often sport in Barre class!

Nike Studio Wraps If you’re a yoga, Pilates or Barre Fitness junkie, you neeeeed these shoes, particularly if: your feet sweat, you have thin fat pads on the soles of your feet, you find that you slip in barefoot fitness classes. Plus. they’re cute — hey, no judgement if that nudges you to work out more often.

Fitbit

I’m sleeping so much better now.

FitBit Activity and Sleep Wristband. It’s sleek and it tracks everything you need: steps, flights of stairs and how well you’re sleeping. Yup, this is the tool I used to figure out that my body wasn’t really sleeping past, oh, 3am. (what did I do with that bit of information? I started taking a cortisol spike inhibitor. Boom, I’m back to 8-9 hours of sleep a night.)

sigg

Take the pledge: no more single serve disposal bottles

Sigg Water Bottle Sigg is hands-down the best metal water bottle. It keeps things warm or cool without passing on nasty BPA toxins. Get the one with the cool flip-top that protects your drinking area from random schmutz. While you’re ordering, also get the Sigg cleaner brush.  I remember seeing a friend’s face when she looked into her Sigg — that she’d used, but hadn’t cleaned in a year — gahhhh, stuff will grow in there!

timbuk2 bag

love

Timbuk2 Messenger Bag I occasionally try other bags, but always end up coming back to Timbuk2. They’re water repellent (important in the liquid sunshine state,) lightweight, durable, and the cross-body strap setup allows you to switch sides so that one shoulder doesn’t start dropping like Lurch on the Adam’s Family. A bright Timbuk2 just screams: take me out to play, take me to the gym!
